1 killed in southeast side house fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – One person was killed in a southeast side house fire, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.

The fire happened in the 3500 block of Apple Street just before 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Upon arrival at the scene, crews reported witnessing flames coming from the structure. 

A short time later firefighters were able to enter the structure and rescued a man from the burning house.

The man was transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition but later died at the hospital.

In addition to the individual killed, a firefighter who fell through the roof was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

IFD says the firefighter was on the roof of the structure, performing a ventilation operation and fell through the house to the first floor. 

During his fall, the firefighter struck a second firefighter, who was not injured.

Authorities the person killed in the fire is not the homeowner.

Damage to the home has been estimated at $40,000.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
