$1,7K missing from Koontz traffic stop prior to fatal shooting

HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — The Howard County Sheriff’s Office says that money seized by Deputy Carl Koontz prior to his death has gone missing.

Deputy Koontz was shot and killed in a shootout in the early morning hours of March 20. Hours before, he had seized around $1,700 during a traffic stop.

HCSO said that money was placed in a marked evidence bag in his car. Days after the shooting, it was realized that the money was not in the evidence system and an investigation was opened on March 30.

Koontz’s vehicle was left unattended after the shooting and then put on display on March 21, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators have not indicated anyone as a suspect, including employees of the sheriff’s office.
