2 arrested after shot fired at Lawrence police car, officer

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) – Two people have been arrested after a shot was fired at an unmarked police car on Friday night, Lawrence Police Department said.

Two people now face preliminary charges following the shooting.

A 16-year-old juvenile has been arrested and faces preliminary charges for possession of a handgun without a license and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.  Additionally, 19-year-old Corey Wright faces a preliminary charge for possession of a handgun without a license

Deputy Chief Gary Woodruff said the incident occurred at 10 p.m. on East 42nd Street near Richelieu Road. That’s between North Franklin and Post roads.

A plainclothes detective was driving the police car on 42nd Street when another car passed. That car then slowed or stopped in front of the police car, and a shot was fired toward the department vehicle, Woodruff said. The bullet did not strike the officer or the car.

It was unknown if the shooter realized the shot was fired at a police car and officer, Woodruff said.

He said at least one gun was recovered, and the five or six people in the vehicle were in custody for questioning. No arrests have been made.
