2-year-old struck, killed by vehicle on west side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 2-year-old boy was struck and killed by a vehicle on the west side of Indianapolis Thursday evening, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Emergency crews responded around 6:30 p.m. to the area of 12th Street and Centennial Street.

Police tell 24-Hour News 8 that the child darted into the street and the driver of a black Dodge Durango could not stop in time.

The boy was in critical condition when paramedics arrived, according to police. Efforts to revive him were not successful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors and friends believe people need to pay more attention when driving through neighborhoods.

“Most of these yards don’t have fences, so you’ve got to look at that, too. It’s a tragedy,” neighbor Anthony Ingram said.

“Cars zip past. I just look at them like ‘you all need to start slowing down.’ I got grandkids, I got to keep a watch out,” family friend Otto Duffy said.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The driver is cooperating with police.
