3 high school students in custody in Avon armed burglary

AVON, Ind. (WISH) — Three high school students have been taken into custody in connection to a Thursday armed burglary in Avon.

Avon Police Department on Saturday released surveillance video showing two people inside a home in the Settlement subdivision appearing to take a big-screen TV. One of the people appeared to be armed with a handgun, police said.

After releasing the video, Avon police received tips from the public, and one person in the video was positively identified. He cooperated with police, which led to the other two suspects being found, Deputy Chief Brian Nugent said Monday.

Brandon Kapangama, 18, is a student at Avon High School and was arrested Sunday night. He faces a preliminary charge of armed burglary and on Monday was being held at the Hendricks County Jail, online records show.

The other two suspects, who could be seen in the video, are 17-year-old students at Ben Davis High School. One of the juveniles was taken into custody Sunday night. The other was taken into custody Monday morning at Ben Davis High School, Nugent said

The two juveniles are being held at Hamilton County juvenile center and also face armed burglary charges, Nugent said.

Police were able to recover the stolen TV, which has since been returned to the owners.

The Hendricks County Prosecutor’s Office will make final charging decisions in the case.
