3 hospitalized after Cumberland crash shuts down US 40

CUMBERLAND, Ind. (WISH) — A man was taken to the hospital in critical condition and two other people were seriously hurt in a crash that shut down US 40 Sunday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to US 40 and Buck Creek Road around 5:30 p.m. for a two-vehicle crash.

Cumberland police say a man was airlifted to St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital in critical condition. He underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

A man and a woman in the second vehicle were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in serious condition.

Both directions of US 40 were shut down for about 40 minutes as crews responded.

Investigators are still working out what caused the crash. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to have been involved.

The three people injured have not been identified.
