38-year-old found guilty of attempted murder of police officer
FRANKLIN, Ind. (WISH) — A 38-year-old Metamora man with a lengthy criminal past who led police on a chase through Greenwood and Indianapolis in 2016 has been found guilty of the attempted murder of a police officer.
A jury also found Paul James Kinnaman guilty of pointing a firearm, possession of a firearm by a violent felon and resisting law enforcement, according to News 8’s newsgathering partner The Daily Journal.
Joe Villanueva, Johnson County chief deputy prosecutor, credited Greenwood police body camera footage with helping to find Kinnaman guilty.
Villanueva said, with the conviction for the four felonies, Kinnaman faces between 26 and 72 years in prison, depending on how the sentence is imposed by the court. If a sentencing enhancement is added by the judge, Kinnaman could face more than 100 years in prison.
Police said an officer tried to pull over a vehicle at Fairview Road and State Road 135 in Greenwood around 6:15 p.m. June 27, 2016, when it fled. After a pursuit lasting about two minutes, the car crashed at East Stop 11 Road and Shelby Street in Indianapolis, and the driver got out and pointed a gun at the pursuing officer, according to Greenwood police. The officer shot Kinnaman in the buttocks.
A total of five vehicles were damaged in the crash.
Kinnaman will return to Johnson Superior Court 3 for sentencing on April 9.
