56-year-old woman dies when SUV goes into pond off US 231
CLOVERDALE, Ind. (WISH) — A 56-year-old rural Cloverdale woman died Wednesday afternoon after the sport-utility vehicle she was driving veered off U.S. 231 and went into a pond, Indiana State Police at Putnamville said.
Authorities were dispatched to the incident shortly after 12:45 p.m. Lavada Anne Boyette was rescued from the SUV, the police said in a news release. Police and fire-rescue personnel attempted to revive Boyette, who was later taken to Putnam County Public Hospital in Greencastle, where she died.
Boyette may have had a medical emergency, Sgt. Joe Watts, public information officer with the Putnamville state police post, said.
Witnesses told police that it appeared the woman was unconscious when the 2013 Honda Pilot went off the U.S. 231 between Hardware Road and Owen County Road 1250 North (also known as Putnam County Road 1300 South). It traveled about 600 feet from the road before coming to rest in the pond, the release said.
Police do not know why the Honda Pilot left the road, and the investigation was continuing with an autopsy scheduled Thursday morning at Terre Haute Regional Hospital with Dr. Roland Kohr, a pathologist.
Traffic in the area was restricted for about three hours after the crash.
