9 guns seized, 24 arrested in IMPD’s ‘Operation First Step’
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A total of 24 criminals have been taken off the streets as part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s “Operation First Step.”
IMPD said that several guns and drugs were taken as part of an overnight raid in the city. The arrests also included three violent felons.
Police didn’t release a lot of details about the raids while they were in progress to ensure protection of the officers involved.
“Today’s operation allowed commanders the opportunity for a focused effort to address narcotics trafficking contributing to violent crime in their districts,” IMPD Chief Troy Riggs said. “We are not letting up and we will continue these aggressive steps.”
Some of the warrants were served on the 600 block of North Temple Avenue, 2700 of Columbia, 3100 block of West 10th Street, and 1500 block of West 23rd Street.
A sweep was also ongoing in other areas of the city on Thursday afternoon, a total of five search warrants were served.
“It is a shame IMPD has to pull these people out of neighborhoods, but at that same token residents are grateful that they do,” said resident Chris Staab.
In addition to facing charges, the suspects must go through a list of services to help the suspects cope once they are released.
IMPD also extended services to the suspects’ family members to help them cope with their loved ones being jailed. IMPD is increasing activity during the 4th of July weekend, but IMPD didn’t elaborate on those investigations.
In all, 12 warrants were served and 24 people were arrested.
According to IMPD, nine guns and around $9,270 in cash was seized with heroin, more than 10 grams of cocaine, more than 20 pounds of marijuana, one ounce of methamphetamine, prescription narcotics, drug paraphernalia and drug making equipment.
