Noblesville High School band to compete in ‘jazz Super Bowl’

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — The Noblesville High School Jazz 1 band students, directed by Bethany Robinson, have been selected to compete at what is considered the “jazz Super Bowl.”

The band is one of 15 bands chosen from the United States and Canada to perform at the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival. They are headed to New York City for the big show. The virtual competition will be hosted by jazz legend Wynton Marsalis.

Robinson, who’s been named Indiana Jazz Educator of the Year and Noblesville Schools teacher of the year in 2015, along with three of the band’s seniors — Taylor Cash, Peter Clark and Nate Peck — talked Monday via videoconference about what it meant to be chosen and the moment they found out they’d be competing against the best of the best.

Noblesville High School Jazz 1 band is also the only Indiana school competing.

The 26th annual Essentially Ellington Festival will happen June 4-5.
