Simply Slabs: 25-year nurse turns furniture making hobby into business

PITTSBORO, Ind. (WISH)– Dan Althoff has been a nurse at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital for 25 years, but in that time he also made time to turn his hobby of making furniture, from scratch, into a business.

Seven years after he built his own sawmill and started taking the hobby more seriously his company, Simply Slabs, is in full swing. Even though Althoff says running his business can be a lengthy process, he sees it as fun.

“I can’t wait to cut into the next tree to see what hidden secrets it has,” Althoff said. He runs the company with his friend, Bill Rusher, and his fiance, Autumn Sauer, who also has a career in nursing, is in charge of marketing.

When it comes to the emergence of Simply Slabs, she told the Gr8 Comeback’s Randall Newsome that it’s been “amazing” watching her fiance’s dream come true.

Althoff plans to run his business full time in the future.
