Anderson police seek donations to offset costs of bomb dog
ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) – A central Indiana police department that lost two of its canine officers in 2012 is seeking donations to cover the costs of a new dog that will be trained to detect explosives.
The Anderson Police Department hopes to raise $15,000 to train and equip the dog. The Herald-Bulletin reports Community Hospital Anderson has agreed to match up to $6,000 toward the purchase.
Police Chief Larry Crenshaw says the department decided to pursue a bomb dog because only one explosives dog is available through the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.
Crenshaw says his department doesn’t budget for the canine units and relies on public donations.
Two of the police department’s dogs, Magnum and Kilo, were killed in the line of duty within a month of each other in 2012.
