Authorities ID victim of near northside shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Authorities have identified the man fatally shot the evening of Sept. 29 on the city’s near northeast side.

The Marion County coroner on Sunday night identified the victim as James Butler. No exact age was released, but IMPD had confirmed during the initial investigation that the victim was in his 20s.

Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a person shot run Friday around 7 p.m. in the 500 block of West 28th Street.

Officer Jim Gillespie said the incident was not believed to be random.

Rev. Charles Harrison with Indy Ten Point Coalition tweeted about the incident Friday night.

According to a monthly update provided Friday afternoon, before the fatal shooting occurred, a total of 101 criminal homicides have occurred in Indianapolis in 2017, compared to 117 criminal homicides by this point in 2016.

This investigation is ongoing.
