Boyfriend faces murder charge after woman shot, killed

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A woman is dead after an early morning shooting on the east side of Indianapolis Thursday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials said.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of North Shortridge Road. This is near East 16th Street and Shadeland Avenue.

Police said the victim was a woman in her late 30s. Investigators say the shooting possibly stemmed from a domestic situation and neighbors said they heard arguing beforehand.

Officers searched for the woman’s boyfriend after the shooting, calling him a person of interest in the case who they wanted for questioning. Around 6:15 a.m., he turned himself in to authorities. At that time police said he had a weapon that may have been used to shoot his girlfriend, but they were still investigating.

Shortly before noon Thursday, IMPD confirmed the woman’s boyfriend, 40-year-old Farrell Downey Jr., had been arrested and preliminarily charged with murder. He was taken to the Arrestee Processing Center where he was being held Thursday without bond.

The victim’s name has not yet been released.
