Brian Williams: Last few months have been torture
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – Brian Williams apologized in his first interview since being suspended from the NBC Nightly News.
In an interview with Matt Lauer Friday morning, Williams said the last few months have been “torture.” He apologized and said he is “different as a result” of what happened. Williams also spoke of his desire to earn the viewers trust again saying he would “go door-to-door if I could.”
Williams was suspended without pay for six months after lying about being inside a military helicopter that took enemy fire while he was reporting from Iraq in 2003. Williams said he “misremembered” the incident.
NBC announced on Thursday that Williams would step down from the NBC Nightly News and become an anchor of breaking news and special reports on MSNBC.
Lester Holt will become the permanent anchor of the Nightly News.
