Butler confirms 9 students now have mumps
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Officials at Butler University say there are now nine cases of mumps.
Marc Allan with Butler University told 24-Hour News 8 that the cases all involved students. All of the students infected were at home.
The university sent out a note to all faculty and students saying that the Marion County Public Health Department is requiring everyone, including undergraduate graduate students, faculty and staff to get an MMR booster vaccine by Friday Feb. 26. The shoots will be given at no cost.
Clinics will be offered. They will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday in the HRC Gym from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you can not attend one of the clinics you must get the booster at your physician’s officer and contact MCPHD to provided documents that you have done so.
MCPHD said that anyone who has not recieved the shot will be asked to stay off campus until March 11. If other cases are reported that date will be extended.
On Saturday, the university reported that three students tested positive for the virus.
IUPUI and IU Bloomington also reported cases on their campus.
Symptoms of mumps include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and swollen, tender salivary glands under the ears on one or both sides. Symptoms typically appear 16 to 18 days after exposure, but can range from 12 to 25 days.
