Carmel police to begin using body cameras

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — Police officers in Carmel soon will be equipped with body cameras.

By the end of the week, officers will have been trained and issued their own cameras.

The department agreed to lease the equipment for five years. The $1.7 million agreement also includes in-car cameras, new interview-room cameras and new tasers.

The department received an $80,000 federal grant to help with the cost.

In a statement, the Carmel police chief said the new cameras will help the department increase transparency and efficiency.
