Child and teen injured in ATV accident

NDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Five-year-old Brayson Matney and his 17-year- old cousin, Justin Bishop, are recovering after the ATV they were riding on crashed into a moving car.

It happened Wednesday evening on West Bradbury and South Lyons Avenue. That’s on the southwest side of Indianapolis.

At last check, both the Bishop and Matney are reported to be in stable condition. Police on scene say the Matney had head injuries and a broken leg.

Police are calling this a scary accident and they said  it shows just how dangerous taking ATVs out on the road can be.

Police told us they believe the Bishop and Matney were riding the ATV when they ran a stop sign and collided with a car.

Sgt. Matt Morgan with IMPD says, “possibly the five-year-old was sitting between the 17-year-old possibly on his lap more or less, and one of them or both of them were steering.”

He says it does not appear they were wearing helmets.

Police say ATVs should never be on the road to begin with, “they don’t need to be on the streets. They don’t need to be on the alleys. Fields and trails and everything else is where they are for.”

One neighbor we spoke with says he sees ATVs out on the road often. He says he even taught his daughter how to ride one, but after this he says he’ll make sure she also knows when and where to take it.

“It’s just all being aware of your surroundings, that’s the key… right time and the right place,” says Candain Strole.

He’s hoping the two injured make a full recovery.

Police said the driver of the car was not hurt. They said that person had the right of way and likely will not face charges.

It’s unclear if the parents of the child and teen on the ATV will be charged.
