ISP: Possible drunk driver involved in crash with school bus

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A crash involving a school bus closed two lanes of I-70 on the east side Thursday morning. Police arrested the driver of the other vehicle on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Indiana State Police said two students were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Also, two adults were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Ten people were on the bus at the time of the crash, seven of which were students.

The crash happened around 10 a.m. on westbound I-70 near the 87 mile marker, which is between Emerson and Arlington avenues.

ISP says a vehicle struck a Warren Township school bus, resulting in the driver of that vehicle being injured.

“The driver hit on the driver’s side of the bus, right in front of the back wheel on the driver’s side,” said ISP Sgt. John Perrine.

Police believe the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol and traveling at a high rate of speed when she lost control.

“We have reason to believe that vehicle may have been driving recklessly just before the collision,” said Perrine.

The driver has been identified as 36-year-old Sarah Nuckols of Indianapolis. She was arrested on charges of driving under the influence. A mugshot for Nuckols has not yet been released.

“It is devastating any time there is a serious crash out here but when it involves a school bus we really get concerned and fortunately this time it appears that all the students on board the bus have escaped serious injuries,” said Perrine.
