Crews search river at Edinburgh after report of man falling from dam
EDINBURGH, Ind. (WISH) – A search of the Big Blue River that began late Thursday afternoon in Johnson County has been suspended for the night.
Sheriff Duane Burgess said a passerby reported shortly before 5 p.m. that a male was on a Big Blue River dam gate, just north of State Road 252. Somehow, the male fell into the river.
Emergency responders will return Friday morning to search the area with watercraft and drones and by foot.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which also responded to the rescue, said a 911 caller advised seeing what was believed to be a male person on top of the dam. He was described as a male with blond hair, a thin build, a red shirt and blue jeans. The witness said the man entered the water and was swept downstream.
“At this time the possible victim remains unidentified and no one has been reported missing from the Edinburgh area this evening,” the Natural Resources release said. “If anyone from the public know of a person who has not returned home and fits the description of the victim, please contact Johnson County Sheriff Department at 317-736-5155.”
Other agencies assisting in the effort were from Bargersville, Columbus, Edinburgh, Franklin, Nineveh and Shelby.
