42-year-old man dead after shooting south of downtown on Madison Avenue

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 42-year-old man died in a shooting Sunday night south of downtown, police and the county coroner’s office said.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and emergency medical crews were called to a report of a person shot about 11:15 p.m. Sunday in the 2100 block of Madison Avenue, just north of East Raymond Street.

After police arrived on the scene, they found a man in a residence dead. Police said the shots came from outside the residence.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office on Monday afternoon identified the man as Jose Tellez Jr.

Police did not immediately have any information on a suspect or whether a threat remains in the area.

The fatal shooting was the second Sunday night in the city.

“Homicide detectives responded to the scene and began canvassing the area for witnesses. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to assist in identifying and collecting potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner’s Office (MCCO) will be assisting and will determine the exact manner and cause of death. The MCCO will release the name of the decedent once proper next-of-kin notification has been made.
