3 shot, 1 dead, at apartments on south side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One person is dead and two others were shot Friday afternoon on the city’s south side, police said.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and medical crews were sent to a report of a person shot just after 2 p.m. Friday to the 400 block of Sandra Lane. That’s at the Country Club Apartments southwest of East Troy Avenue and Madison Avenue.

Once officers arrived they found two people had been shot. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and another was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office has identified the person shot and killed as 23-year-old Daniel Johnson.

Officers were soon notified of a suspect vehicle that fled the area. That vehicle was located a short time later in the area of East Southport Road and Emerson Avenue. After a brief police pursuit, the driver of the vehicle pulled over. Officers approached the vehicle and located another person who had been shot. That person was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Another person walked into a hospital on the city’s south side later Friday afternoon with a gunshot wound. Investigators are still working to determine if that victim is connected to the shooting in the 400 block of Sandra Lane.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact them.

“If this was one of your family members, your friends, you would want someone to step forward,” said IMPD public information officer Genae Cook.

Cook also said a child who was inside the residence at the time of the shooting has been checked out and is fine.

Police do not believe the community is in danger.

“At this point in time we don’t have any information to think that any more people are involved,” said Cook. “But if someone has information, that’s when they need to come forward.”

The identities of the victims have not been released.
