20-year-old charged with stabbing his uncle to death

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 20-year-old Indianapolis man has been charged with murder in connection to the stabbing death of his 62-year-old uncle in September on the east side.

Dantae D. Benberry was formally charged Oct. 5 with murder, according to court documents released Tuesday by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

About 8:45 p.m. Sept. 11, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to a home in the 2900 block of East 34th Street. That’s across from the north border of Washington Park. Police found Gregory Hunt dead in the home’s basement.

A relative told police that Benberry was homeless and Hunt occasionally let Benberry stay at the home. Another person who was also staying at the home found Hunt bleeding in the basement shortly after Benberry had left the house through a back door.

Hunt had a protective order issued against Benberry in March after the two had been in a physical altercation, court documents said.

The coroner’s office determined Hunt died of multiple stab wounds.

A jury trial has been set for Dec. 10.
