21-year-old gets 53 years in prison for murder of 19-year-old

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 21-year-old Indianapolis man who was found guilty of a 2016 murder and a handgun violation has been sentenced to 53 years in prison, online court records show.

Ryan Scott was sentenced Friday after being found guilty in a three-day jury trial in September for shooting and killing 19-year-old Steve Hunter. It occurred about 9 p.m. Oct. 10, 2016, in the 5900 block of Milhouse Court, near High School Road and Thompson Road on the southwest side.

Scott’s sentencing was Friday in Marion Superior Court, Criminal Division 3.

Prosecutors said Scott is the third person to be convicted for his involvement in the murder of Hunter. Scott was believed to be the shooter in the robbery. Lindsay Wyatt and Sierra Robinson were also convicted for their roles in the robbery of Hunter.

In October 2017, Wyatt pleaded guilty to Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and was sentenced 14 years in prison.

Robinson pleaded guilty to robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and received a 10-year sentence in prison.

Prosecutors said Wyatt and Robinson received plea deals in which they agreed to testify in Scott’s trial.

According to their testimony, the three planned to rob Hunter after a transaction in their vehicle. Before picking the victim up from his home on Oct. 10, 2016, Scott got into the trunk of their SUV and opened the tailgate. The three then picked up Hunter while Scott remained in the rear of the vehicle. Armed with a handgun, Scott exited the rear of the vehicle and opened the backseat door closest to Hunter. After opening the door and while still in the process of attempting a robbery, Scott shot Hunter in the neck. Scott then dragged Hunter’s body out of the car and onto the side of the road before the defendants left the scene.

Later that evening, a witness discovered Hunter’s body on the side of the road in 5900 block of Milhouse Court and called police.

An autopsy of Hunter determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the neck.
