39-year-old facing possible firearm, drug violations shot by SWAT team

ROACHDALE, Ind. (WISH) — A 39-year-old Roachdale man is stable in an Indianapolis hospital after a shootout with a SWAT team near the border of Montgomery and Putnam counties, state police said Thursday.

The shooting occurred about 10:05 a.m. Wednesday at a home in the East 6000 block of Montgomery County Road 1200 South (also known as Putnam County Road 1400 North). That’s a rural area about a mile northeast of Roachdale and east of Montgomery County Road 550 East.

Matthew G. Olsen was shot, a news release from Indiana State Police said. OIsen was initially listed in serious condition at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis.

Troopers said a Montgomery County multijurisdictional special weapons and tactics team was trying to arrest Olsen on a felony warrant when he shot at them. Deputies fired back and wounded him.

Police said no officers were hurt.

The state police release did not provide any details on the warrant.

Online court records show an arrest warrant was issued Wednesday morning in Montgomery Superior Court 2 on the probable cause to believe Olsen “committed the crimes of Serious Violent Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Possession of Marijuana.” The online records also show a warrant had been issued Wednesday afternoon to search the home for firearms, marijuana and paraphernalia.

The state police news release said names of the officers involved will not yet be released.
