CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — A man died in a Friday afternoon crash of four vehicles along 96th Street on Friday, Carmel police announced three days later.

Stephen Zimmerman, 79, of Indianapolis, died upon arrival at Ascension St. Vincent-Indianapolis hospital shortly after the crash.

Carmel police and fire crews were called to the crash just after 5:30 p.m. Friday at 96th Street and Copley Drive. That’s west of the roundabout at Spring Mill Road.

Police think a westbound Mercedes struck another westbound vehicle that had stopped for traffic, and the impact sent the Mercedes into eastbound lanes where it was hit by a Lexus sedan head-on, Carmel police said in a news release Friday.

Zimmerman was a passenger in the Lexus. The Lexus driver, who was not named in the release, was taken to Ascension St. Vincent-Indianapolis hospital with what what police called serious injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Two additional people, who also were not named in the release, were sent to Ascension St. Vincent-Indianapolis hospital with what police called minor injuries. A fifth person was treated at the crash.

‘Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the crash,” the release said.
