Grandfather, child hurt when youth finds gun, it’s fired

GREENCASTLE, Ind. (WISH) — A child and a grandfather were injured after the youth found a handgun in the elder’s bedroom, Indiana State Police said Saturday.

The child was visiting grandparents Friday, but a news release from state police did not disclose the exact time or location of the shooting or the type of handgun. Police also did not provide names of those injured.

The child found the handgun and put a round in the chamber, police said.

“The grandfather entered the bedroom and attempted to take the handgun away from the juvenile. During this attempt, the handgun went off. The bullet traveled through the grandfather’s left hand and struck the juvenile in the right leg,” the release said.

The grandfather took the child to the Putnam County Hospital for treatment for both of them. The child was later taken by ambulance to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

No criminal charges were announced in the news release, but police warned people to always keep firearms and ammunition away from children.
