Homicide investigation underway after man found dead in burning house

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A homicide investigation is underway on the city’s near east side after a man was found dead inside of a burning home on Friday, police said.

Around 8:45 a.m. Friday, the Indianapolis Fire Department responded to a fire at a residence in the 3600 block of East Vermont Street.

Upon arrival, firefighters found Charles Burgess Jr., 24, inside the house. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene due to “suspicious circumstances,” Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office said that Burgess’s cause of death was “multiple trauma.”
