IMPD: Man leads police on chase after trying to hit officer

Crime Watch 8

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials say they have a man in custody who tried to hit an officer with his car and then led police on a chase.

The pursuit started near Interstate 465 and Sam Jones Expressway and ended in a ditch near Kentucky Avenue and Mann Road Tuesday morning. The chase lasted about three miles.

Police say the suspect was stopped for having license plates that didn’t belong on the truck. That’s when police say the suspect tried to hit the officer on I-465, but missed.

Police then used stop sticks on Mann Road which sent the suspect into a ditch near Kentucky Avenue. Once he crashed in the ditch, he ran on foot but not very far. A police dog stopped him.

Officials say the man will be preliminarily charged for assaulting the K-9 when he was punching it to get it off.

Police did say the suspect had some previous warrants.
