INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis man has been sentenced to 65 years in prison for the murder and robbery of a man in 2016.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office say Gerald Tyree has been sentenced for the murder of Eric Ballard. Tyree’s sentencing was on Thursday after being convicted after a two-day trial earlier this month.

Investigators say they obtained a phone recording of Tyree admitting to the murder from a witness. The call was compared to jail recordings of Tyree when he was serving a previous stint.

Prosecutors say Ballard’s girlfriend came home to their apartment to find the sliding glass door open. Ballard was in their child’s bedroom and had been shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Tyree was convicted for murder, felony murder, robbery resulting in serious injury and carrying a handgun without a license.

Another man, Billy Holmes, was also charged in the case. He cooperated with Tyree’s prosecution and pleaded guilty to robbery resulting in bodily injury in March 2018. Holmes will be sentenced on Nov. 17.
