Man dies in northwest side shooting; suspect in custody

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police say a suspected gunman is cooperating with police after an altercation led to a fatal shooting at an apartment complex on the city’s northwest side.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the 3900 block of Wind Drift East Drive, near West 38th Street and Interstate 465, around 8:04 p.m. Saturday for a call of “shots fired.” That’s at the Lakeside Crossing at Eagle Creek apartment complex.

When police and emergency medical personnel arrived, they found a man who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to IMPD Capt. Robert Troutt at the scene.

A man who had called 911 about the incident was still at the scene. Police said they believe he is the shooter and that he is cooperating with the investigation.

According to Troutt, the incident began as an altercation at a different location and ended at the apartment complex. Neither the victim nor the suspect live at Lakeside Crossing at Eagle Creek. The victim was meeting up with friends who live there.

The suspected shooter, who police said has a valid gun permit, was taken to the IMPD Homicide Office on Saturday night to give an official statement.
