Man fired shots during Carmel road rage incident, police say

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — An Indianapolis man was arrested Friday morning in Carmel after police say a road rage incident ended with him firing shots at another car’s tires.

A 21-year-old man and a 56-year-old man, both of Indianapolis, were traveling southbound on Michigan Road around 8:45 a.m. Friday when they both pulled into a Village Pantry at 106th Street, according to Lt. Joe Bickel with the Carmel Police Department.

The two men decided to fight and engaged in a fistfight and wrestling, Bickel said.

The 21-year-old, who police did not identify, “got the better hand” in the fight and got in his car to leave, Bickel said. That’s when the 56-year-old man, identified as Dean Kelso, fired two shots at the other man’s tires.

Kelso stayed at the scene, where he was questioned by detectives, Bickel said. Investigators were able to locate the 21-year-old man, who confirmed what had happened.

The men, who suffered minor injuries during the physical fight, both refused treatment.

Kelso was charged with the following:

  • 2 counts of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, a level 5 felony
  • 2 counts of pointing a firearm, a level 6 felony
  • 1 count of intimidation, a level 5 felony
  • 1 count of battery, a class B misdemeanor
  • 1 count of disorderly conduct, a class B misdemeanor

The 21-year-old was not charged, Bickel said.
