Officers sweep Morgan County to serve 130 arrest warrants

MOORESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — They’re calling it Operation Accountability.

In Morgan County, federal, state and local law enforcement agencies worked together to serve 130 arrest warrants.

News 8 tagged along with a team that primarily focused on the Mooresville area. The team had about 20 arrests warrants to serve, and there were some challenges

With no warning, police showed up in full force pounding on doors. Door after door, they were looking for anyone in the county with an outstanding arrest warrant.

“He’s not lived here since I lived here,” said one Brooklyn resident.

Often times, police couldn’t find who they were looking for. Only one of eight people with warrants was found on Friday.

“It’s pretty common. They just float around from address to address. Whoever will let them sleep on their couch or stay in the room for a few days. We’re going to move on to the next one,” said Mooresville Police detective Chad Richhart.

In one Brooklyn mobile home, authorities located Sherry Burton. They say she was wanted on a misdemeanor for driving while suspended with a prior conviction.

“She’ll be on her way to the Morgan County Jail,” said Richhart. He continued, “We have everything from felony warrants to misdemeanor warrants. A good mix of everything.”

The purpose of the roundup was to get everyone with an active arrest warrant off the street. Dozens of officers from the US Marshal’s Service, Indiana State Police, Morgan, Johnson, Owen, Monroe, Marion, and Hendricks county sheriff’s offices assisted, as well as Brooklyn, Mooresville and Martinsville police departments. The law enforcement agencies met prior to the roundup, divided into teams of 8-10 officers and split the warrants into fewer than 25 warrants per team.

“It’s a good approach. Getting everybody out here. You have a little bit more safety in numbers. Usually when we’re out serving warrants there may be two or three of us doing it,” Richhart said.

And even though the suspects were tough to find, authorities say Operation Accountability was a success.

“Even if we get one arrest, I’d say it’s successful because we’re out here hitting it. We’re doing what we can and just working together as a team,” Richhart said.

News 8 reached out to authorities for a final tally of who and how many were arrested, as well as their charging information and mugshots. On Friday night, we had not heard back.
