Police say man’s death along West 52nd Street was a homicide

UPDATE: The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said Tuesday a man’s Saturday shooting death is being investigated as a homicide. Initially, police were working to determine if the man’s injuries were self-inflicted.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office has identified the man as 30-year-old Tevin Newman.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man was found shot dead Saturday afternoon on the city’s northwest side, police said.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded about 12:45 p.m. Saturday to a report of a person shot in the 5200 block of West 52nd Street. That is near the intersection of Lafayette Road and West 52nd Street.

IMPD initially said officers found a gunshot victim who was not awake and not breathing. Later, IMPD said the man was found with a gunshot wound, and medics told police he’d died at the crime scene.

Detectives have been unable to determine if the man died of self-inflicted injuries or if they were by a third party, a news release from IMPD said.

The man’s name was not released pending notification of family by the Marion County Coroner’s Office, IMPD said.

No other information on the crime was immediately provided by police.

Anyone with information was asked to contact IMPD homicide detective Daniel Smith at 317-327-3475 or Daniel.Smith@indy.gov.

The fatal shooting is at least the second in Indianapolis this weekend.
