Second arrest made in Muncie block party shooting that killed 1, injured 17
MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — A second man has been arrested in connection to a deadly block party shooting in July that killed a 30-year-old man and injured at least 17 others, Muncie police said Monday.
As of Friday, no one has been charged in the death of Joseph Bonner.
According to a Monday news release from the Muncie Police Department, Justin Bonner, 29, was arrested Monday for his role in the shooting.
Justin Bonner was formally charged Friday with a felony count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, the Delaware County prosecutor said in a news release.
Muncie police had earlier arrested 36-year-old John Vance on Aug. 1 for his connection to the shooting. He was charged Aug. 4 with two felony counts of aggravated battery, a felony count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and a felony count of criminal recklessness for shooting a firearm into a building.
Court documents previously obtained by News 8 say a fight led up to the moments before the shooting.
Around 1:20 a.m. July 30, shots rang out at a crowded community block party in Muncie.
Delaware County Prosecutor Eric M. Hoffman said in a news release issued Monday night, “The investigation into Joseph Bonner’s death and the events of July 30 is rapidly evolving and ongoing. This is a wide ranging investigation that includes, but is not limited to: the homicide, the shooting, injuries sustained by a victim from being hit by a vehicle, as well as violations relating to hosting loud and late night parties. It will all take time to complete and is far from over.”
According to the probable cause affidavit, witnesses told police they saw Joseph Bonner and Vance in the middle of the party at the DJ booth.
Bonner then allegedly swung at Vance, sparking the fight. Shortly after that, shots rang out, killing Bonner and injuring multiple others.
Vance is being charged with two counts of aggravated battery, a count of unlawful possession of a gun, and a count of criminal recklessness.
Justin Bonner was arrested on warrants and preliminary felony charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, and possessing a firearm as a serious violent felon.
Vance is still being held at the Delaware County jail on a $105,000 bond.
Police ask anyone with information on the shooting to contact the Muncie Police Department Detective Division at 765-747-4867.
