Security symposium to help places of worship in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Homeland Security started receiving requests. Lots of requests.

The callers were usually from someone who belonged to one of the city’s many places of worship. Their appeals sought help in making security plans.

Over the years, massive shootings have been reported at places of worship. One of the most recent shootings happened Friday in Christchurch, New Zealand; 50 people died at two mosques.

After learning about the requests that Indianapolis Homeland Security could not handle, the Minority Police Association decided to put on a symposium on security for places of worship. It will be from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. April 4 at the Hardin Gathertorium at Martin University, 2167 Avondale Place.

Tina Lewis Rowe will be the presenter. The former law enforcement officer’s website says she has trained and presented to thousands of audiences about police and private sector organizational topics, and security planning for courthouses, businesses and places of worship.

People who want to participate can call 317-339-9391. Tickets, $25 each, are also available online.

“People are concerned about their security, and churches and places of worship are no different,” said  Maj. Kendale Adams, an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer with the Minority Police Officer Association.
