Sheriff’s deputy bit by K-9 while trying to arrest wanted man
LEBANON, Ind. (WLFI) — A man with a felony warrant out of Tippecanoe County led police on a foot chase along Interstate 65 on Saturday night before being caught by a police dog.
It happened on Saturday around 6:40 p.m. Deputies said they pulled 24-year-old Tyren Barnes over for a traffic stop. Barnes initially gave deputies false identification. Once deputies realized it, they went to place him into custody on a Tippecanoe County felony warrant.
Deputies then said Barnes ran north into a ditch on I-65 near the 134 mile marker. A Boone County Sheriff’s K-9 was released to chase Barnes. As a result, police said the K-9 mistakenly bit one of the assisting deputies.
As other law enforcement officers arrived on scene, a second K-9 was released by the Whitestown Police Department in attempt to catch Barnes. The K-9 caught Barnes and he was taken into custody.
Barnes, along with three law enforcement officers were seen by medical staff for minor injuries at Witham Hospital. All three law enforcement officers were treated and released from the hospital.
Barnes is currently being held at the Boone County Jail on the Tippecanoe County warrant, as well as on local preliminary charges of Resisting Law Enforcement, Battery Against Public Safety Official, and Striking a Law Enforcement Animal.
