Speedway OKs contract to add body cameras

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) — The Town Council on Monday night approved a contract to purchase body cameras for the Marion County town’s police officers.

Officials at the meeting said 38 uniformed officers will receive body cameras as part of a five-year contract totaling about $65,000 a year. Cameras also will be installed in 33 Speedway police cars.

The contract is with the same provider used by Fishers, Lawrence and Indianapolis Metropolitan police departments. The town saved money by “piggybacking” onto the IMPD contract, officials said.

No timetable was presented at the council meeting for the department to start using body cameras.
