Victim grazed by bullet in home break-in; suspect flees

Crime Watch 8

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police in Indianapolis spent hours searching Fountain Square Tuesday morning after they say a victim was grazed by a bullet during a home break-in.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials say it happened near Prospect and Spruce streets. They say the suspect made entry into the victim’s home and at least one shot was fired.

A police source told 24-Hour News 8 that two officers were responding on a welfare check of a man around 10:30 a.m. at his home on Pleasant Street when they heard gunfire. The victim, Todd Curbeaux, told 24-Hour News 8: “I thought I was going to die.”

“I thought I was hit because I instantly grabbed my head. I could feel something hit my head and it made me drop to my knees. I didn’t see no blood on my head so I didn’t think it was that bad,” Curbeaux said showing I-Team 8’s Bennett Haeberle the scar that was left on his forehead.

Authorities detained suspects in at least two different locations but had difficulty making an arrest after Curbeaux identified both of the suspects as the alleged shooter, sources say.

Curbeaux said the suspect took his cell phone but dropped it before leaving his backyard.

Officers set up a perimeter in the area and were searching with K-9 units. On-duty SWAT officers were also called in to assist.

A description of the shooter wasn’t immediately clear but the suspect was believed to be armed.

Neighbors were encouraged to avoid the area.

Curbeaux says he barely knew the suspect and they had only met earlier this week. Curbeaux told 24-Hour News 8 that he was asleep in a chair when he heard pounding on the door.

“When I opened the door he come in and pulled his pistol out and told me to come up off my stuff,” Curbeaux said.

Police later found a bullet in wall.

“He came over today looking for an easy target I guess,” Curbeaux said.
