Victim, suspect ID’d in Lawrence fatal shooting
LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — Police on Sunday identified a man who died Friday and the suspect charged in his shooting.
Officers with the Lawrence Police Department were called around 4 p.m. Friday to the 11000 block of High Grass Drive, north of 56th Street and Sunnyside Road, on a report of a person shot.
A man, identified Sunday as 70-year-old George Oakley, was found shot there and taken to an area hospital, where he later died, Deputy Chief Gary Woodruff said Friday.
Antawin Williams, 31, was arrested and faces a preliminary charge of murder.
Police initially said Oakley and Williams were related and staying in the house where the shooting happened. On Tuesday, the Lawrence Police Department issued a correction, saying Oakley and Williams are not related as family members although they knew each other.
The shooting was a result of an ongoing dispute between the two men, police said Sunday.
A final charging decision in the case will be made in the coming days by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
