Day care targeted in recent phone scam

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) – Police say a day care was scammed and lost nearly $1,000.

According to 24-Hour News 8’s news partners at the Daily Journal, Woodside Children’s Center in the 3600 block of West Fairview Road was contacted by a person who said they were from Duke Energy.

The caller said their power would be turned off if they did not receive payment on a prepaid debit card.

The director loaded two cards, one with $500 and one with $450. She called the number back and gave them the information off the card. After making the phone call she checked the records and realized the electric bill was already paid.

The director called the sheriff’s department to report the scam.

Police say residents should think twice before sending money by phone.
