Despite 6 month high in gas prices, Memorial Day prices are low

(MEDIA GENERAL) – A new survey shows Memorial Day tops the list as the most popular weekend to travel of all three major summer holidays. The GasBuddy survey asked 150,000 members to rate warm weather travel holidays, after Memorial Day came Independence Day and then Labor Day.

With the national average for a gallon of gas at $2.72, it is amongst the highest price in nearly six months. But, it’s not all bad news for Memorial Day drivers.

“Even with the current uptick in gas prices, we predict most U.S. travelers will pay the cheapest Memorial Day gas prices since at least 2009,” said GasBuddy’s Patrick DeHaan.

In the last week, Midwestern states saw the biggest rise in prices leading up to the holiday weekend. Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin all saw jumps of close to 10 cents.

The GasBuddy study also showed 40 percent of people will try to spend less than $500 per trip, including food and lodging.

If you’re looking to travel this weekend, you can find out ahead of time how much it will cost you by using GasBuddy’s trip calculator.
