CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — Each and every week Dick Wolfsie shares a story that is unique to central Indiana.

This week Dick went to Carmel to explore new heights and learn the rock climbing ropes at Hoosier Heights, the largest rock climbing facility in the state.

“When we opened in 2012 we were the largest facility in the country,” explained Ryan Fischer, of Hoosier Heights.

The facility is 33,000 square feet and houses multiple rock climbing walls and obstacles.

Visitors of the facility can test their strengths and speeds by following along different rock wall routes.

“We’ll change the routes,” said Fischer. “Every two months this gym will have all new routes in it.”

The change keeps the athletes challenged and gives them opportunities to try new climbs. The routes are also ranked on the Yosemite Decimal System, which starts with a 5.

“The Yosemite Decimal System, otherwise known as YDS to us in the States, and it all starts with a 5, so any technical or free climb is considered a 5, and then it’s point something, and that goes all the way up to 15. So this one here is a 5.5, that’s something that we would consider to be a beginner climb,” said Fischer.

Fischer explained different techniques, equipment and membership availability visitors can enjoy at the facility.
