Doctors: Fall allergies starting to cause problems

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – If you aren’t suffering from fall allergies yet, get ready. Doctors say they are right around the corner. Experts told 24-Hour News 8 this could be a very rough season for people with allergies.

Mid-September to mid-October can be especially brutal for allergy sufferers. Pollen from Ragweed and mold cause problems for people in the fall, while pollen from trees is the culprit in the spring.

“The specific pollens that are out are different. A lot of times you’ll see people that have allergies in the spring and the fall have them both seasons, but a lot of times people are only allergic to things that are out in the spring and some that are only allergic to things in the fall,” said Eskenazi Health Dr. Colin Rogerson.

The heavy rain Indianapolis received in June made for healthy Ragweed plants this fall, and the warm temperatures we’ve seen up until very recently mean more mold. If you’re starting to notice the itchy eyes, sneezing and coughing – there are some things you can do.

“First and foremost, you can try over-the-counter medicines. A lot of times they are really effective. If after 2-3 days of using them consistently you’re still experiencing a lot of symptoms, then it’s time to go see your doctor,” said Rogerson.

If you ever feel swelling or tightness in your throat, that’s another time experts said you need to go to your doctor. Eskenazi Health gave 24-Hour News 8 some things you can do to prevent allergy symptoms.

  • Shower frequently to remove pollen from your skin and hair.
  • Keep your windows closed and turn on the air conditioner.
  • Dry your clothes inside in the dryer instead of hanging clothes outside.
  • Remove decaying leaves from your yard and gutters.
  • If you rake leaves in the fall, wear a face mask.
  • When you first turn on your car air conditioner, leave your windows open and avoid breathing the air for several minutes until mold spores can disperse

Rogerson also recommended getting tested if your allergies are severe. A test will tell you what exactly you’re allergic to, so you can avoid it.
