Dogs training to detect patients without COVID-19 symptoms

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Asymptomatic “silent carriers” play a big role in spreading the coronavirus.

On Monday, News 8’s medical reporter, Dr. Mary Gillis, D.Ed., discussed new research involving dogs as a potential way to detect patients without symptoms. For years, canines have been used to sniff out everything from drugs to explosives, from malaria to cancer.

The research hails from the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. While only in Phase 1, researchers are optimistic and say, if effective, the pups could assess up to 250 people per hour.
