Elderly woman dies after east side fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Firefighters say an elderly woman died after she was pulled from a burning home on the east side of Indianapolis Wednesday evening.

The fire started around 6:30 p.m. in the 3500 block of North Emerson Avenue. Firefighters received a number of 911 calls and learned there may be someone trapped inside the house.

When they arrived they found heavy flames coming from the front. During their primary search of the home, firefighters located 87-year-old Ruth Macklin. She was brought outside to awaiting medics where officials say she went into cardiac arrest.

CPR was performed on scene. Firefighters say Macklin was transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition where she later died.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
