New emoji release features theme of gender inclusivity

(WISH) — More than 100 new emojis have been approved by the Unicode Consortium and will soon be rolled out later this year.

The big theme for the rollout appears to be gender inclusivity.

Users will soon have options of using the transgender flag, a gender-neutral Santa and a man wearing a wedding veil. Another entry that is sure to be popular is called the “Italian hand gesture,” which is the pinched fingers often used to express confusion, disbelief or rejection.

Ninjas, mammoths, bubble tea, a human heart and a smiley face wearing a funny mask are also among the 117 new and approved emojis.

Imagine what these could do for the plot of an “Emoji Movie” sequel…if only we could be so lucky.
