Ex-auditor convicted of taking money from government, in-law

LA PORTE, Ind. (AP) – A former auditor for a northwestern Indiana county has been convicted of embezzling more than $150,000 in government funds and defrauding her father-in-law of at least $400,000.

The U.S. Justice Department said in a news release that 67-year-old Mary Ray of La Porte was convicted Thursday on charges including theft of government monies and wire fraud.

Prosecutors say Ray embezzled the funds from LaPorte County coffers from September 2011 through December 2012 while serving as the county’s chief deputy auditor. Authorities say she also defrauded her 86-year-old father-in-law out of money he entrusted her to oversee.

According to prosecutors, Ray used the funds to gamble at casinos.

Ray’s sentencing is scheduled for December.
