Ex-congressman Baron Hill entering Indiana’s US Senate race

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Former U.S. Rep. Baron Hill says he’s ready to enter Indiana’s U.S. Senate race to replace retiring Republican Dan Coats.

The Democrat said in an email to supporters that he’ll file paperwork Wednesday to begin his Senate campaign. Hill says in that message that he’s running “because working people across Indiana need a fighter” who’s on their side.

Hill announced last month that he would launch a 2016 Senate campaign in early June. He says in Wednesday’s message that “for too long, working people across America have been counted out, and left out, of our economic progress.”

The former five-term congressman is the first Democrat to enter the race.

On the Republican side, U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman and former Indiana Republican Party Chairman Eric Holcomb have announced Senate campaigns.
