Excavation to take place at Bloomington square for new plaza

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) – Anthropology and archaeology researchers are overseeing an excavation at the county courthouse square in Bloomington as part of work to put in a new plaza.

The (Bloomington) Herald-Times  reports the public is invited to watch the excavation scheduled to begin Monday morning. No significant archaeological finds are expected, but researcher Meghan Buchanan says they’ll document any findings.

Buchanan says the excavation will make for a “nontraditional learning experience.” She says researchers hope children from day camps will be able to come and watch.

Indiana University researcher and Monroe County Council member Cheryl Munson says remains of buildings such as Bloomington’s first police and fire station are buried underneath the square.
